Abstract

The title of this research is "Analysis Signs of Controversial utterances in Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code". This research aims to, the first, explain the linguistic sign of controversy in the values of humanity and second, explain the meaning of the sign through the analysis of denotation meaning and connotation meaning. The type of data in this research is descriptive qualitative (Creswell, 2007) and uses a semiotic analysis approach method with the approach of two semiotic theories Saussure's Signifier and signified, to find what are the signs of controversy language used by Dan Brown in the novel The Da Vinci Code and using Barthes' denotation and connotation theory to find what are the meanings of the signs of controversy, this research using three steps of data analysis techniques namely reduction, data display and verification. The data collection method used in this research is the observation method (Kothari, 2004), and using documentation techniques as data collection techniques. In the observation method, research is carried out by reading, recording and identifying signs and meanings.In this research, 24 signifier and signified data were found that explained the linguistic signs of controversial utterances in human values and through the analysis of denotation and connotation meanings, 24 denotation and connotation meanings were found that explained the meaning of the signs in the controversial utterances. Based on the results of data analysis of controversial utterances signs found in the novel The Da Vinci Code, through linguistic sign analysis and analysis of denotation and connotation meanings, it can be concluded that the novel The Da Vinci Code, contains language signs and meanings that are controversial in human values where Dan Brown uses violent language such as the word murder, insults, and signs that contain the meaning of discrimination or crime
